Great article regarding who we are and the importance of racing fuel in WorldSBK & motorsport in general.
English translation below ⬇️⬇️⬇️
What’s ETS? A producer of high end racing fuels - ETS Racing Fuels is well known for developing very high performance racing fuels with high added value however to be able to satisfy not only very high profile teams but also to content a wider audience its products portfolio has been enriched with more affordable fuels. ETS Racing Fuels wide portfolio supplies the teams of a large range of motorsport discipline such as road racing bikes, motocross, jetski, car rallying, circuit racing, drifting, drag racing and even every day usage supercars with performance street fuels.
Where we’re coming from? We’re coming from a big oil company : the E of ETS stood for ESSO and ETS company was a subsidiary of EXXON MOBIL’s French R&D center to support specific projects such like motorsport (we started to develop racing fuels for 24 hours of le Mans Peugeot / Esso back in the late 80s). End of 90s ETS company became independent from Exxon Mobil, grew by its own and in 2014 has been integrated into the HCS group who is an international leading supplier of high-value hydrocarbon, with different production site over the world.
Where’re HQ and labs? HCS group HQ is in Frankfurt, ETS Racing Fuels are mainly manufactured in France and in the UK
How many people are employed? HCS Group is about 450 people, ETS Racing Fuels is one of the several activities of the group. TO precisely answer your question s not easy, as for example people in production are doing tasks for different product lines, but to make a vague picture I would say we are about 30 people involved with motorsport fuels
What kind of competence we have? Which kind of education has people designing fuels? We have different profiles depending on the market segments, we have master degrees chemists in charge of producing & quality controlling the fuel which are more value driven. For the very high end fuels, we rely on PH.D chemists having an amazing understanding of racing engine technologies and who can successfully correlate engine behaviour & the fuel technologies he develops, this gives us a unique advantage over our competitors. On top another business HCS Groups is involved in is the manufacturing of specific test & homologation fuel to engine/car/truck/bike manufacturer worldwide. Building day after day technical relationship with the automotive industry helps us to understand better the interaction of fuels & engines. Our technical staff are passionate about fuel technologies, but also by motorsport !
Which championship are we working with? For the Motorbikes Business we are involved in WSBK, MotoGP, MXGP, and several national championship. For Car business, we’re deeply involved in ERC, and many national rally champioships. We’re also supplying rallycross, hillclimb drivers, track days racers through our partnership with Curbstone, we also supply out of Europe championships such like Formula4 UAE or the Thailand Super Series
How long we’re in WSBK? We are supplying team in WSBK since 2003. We’ve started entering the paddock thanks to the successful technical partnership we built with Ten Kate (and that we still have – our brand & employees value are being customer focus and long term oriented)
How the relationship with Yamaha GRT is started? We met Filippo Conti in a WSBK round in Thailand while we were servicing our customers (SSP / SBK teams) delivering our fuels on the Chang circuit. This was back in 2016 the season before the GRT team switched to Yamaha Supersport bikes. Filippo is very professional according to my boss who very liked the attitude, the approach and the plan he had already set early in the 2016 season. On his side, Filippo spotted ETS Racing Fuels as a great opportunity to increase his 2016 bike performance (GRT bike got +3 HP switching from a competitor to ETS fuel ESC 1933!) and we fast came to an agreement to work together in 2016. The following seasons, proved that building partnership between GRT & ETS was a great choice in terms of image, reliability, trust and results (with a world champion title)
Compared to pump fuel, what’s the delta performance we can achieve? it may vary a lot according to engine, but most of all tuning ! Racing fuels (up to RON 102 for FIM regulated) offer superior octane vs pump fuel (usually RON 98). Higher octane fuel allow engine tuners to set in a safe way higher compression ratio to the engine and therefore getting more HP delivered. Compared to a RON 102 fuel, ESC 1933 or ESC 1935 fuels thanks to their specific technologies offer higher energy (do higher HP), faster combustion speed (so faster acceleration that riders will notice mainly on dynamic mode = on track), higher cooling effect (engine temperature is better controlled during the whole race), cleanliness of the fuel system (check picture of a Yamaha racing bike using ETS & other using pump fuel) – clean engine = more reliability & better performance It’s really difficult to give you a punctual number for performance delta, but when you refer to a 3 HP performance vs a competitor racing fuels on a 60 HP engine, this represent 2 % increase. Compared to pump fuel you can expect at least 5% performance increase on a dyno (plus much more on track & reliability)
Does ETS have a special blend for GRT? GRT use our best product that is available to sell to any racer who may need an extra performance from his bike, the fule name is ESC 1935
How much does it cost fuel sold in WorldSBK? It depends on which fuel segment we are talking about, some teams are looking for reliability, consistency & logistic service. Other are looking on top for the highest performance achievement. ETS Racing Fuels has developed different offering to answer customer needs.
What are the main tech differences compared to pump fuel? Chemical production….. There are so many difference between pump fuel & ETS Racing Fuels On top of the one alrady mentioned in the previous question, I will mention consistency
ETS Racing Fuels are blends of molecules of 98 % purity. Batch after batch we always apply the same formulation, with the same high quality components, so it makes the same very consistent fuel batch after batch, year after year. The fuel chemistry (same molecules at same concentration) being always the same, the physical properties of ETS fuels are always the same
When you analyse pump fuel, you are realizing its a mix of about 400 different molecules. Getting a fuel analysis of the pump fuel composition month after month will give huge difference of type of molecules and their concentration. Pump gasoline must answer to a specification named EN228 which is a very wide (minimum or maximum parameters) On top EN228 impose seasonality of fuel, so the winter fuel quality & physical property, will be totally different than the summer one.
May stock user of track day notice any difference? Track days can measure engine difference with our IRF 102 (price driven approach and do not request a fine tuning) but even more with our fuels which are not FIM regulated such like our ESR GC4. The combustion energy & combustion speed is so great that even one time a customer called us complaining (and joking) that his arms were longer because of high torque increase he got using this fuel !
Does Riders and/or technician from GRT gives any kind of indication for fuel development? We listen carefully GRT feedback, as well as from any customer in order to update the fuel in case of need. We are pationnate about our jobs and we love to service customer, so we are good hears to them
Does 2019 WSBK fuel had any evolution step during the season? Our latest FIM road racing regulated fuel has been launched on the market in 2017 and it is giving great results. We pay attention to the consistency of our product lifetime on the market as we don’t want to force all our customers to reset their bike every years ...

Some good performances for the VW Polo R5 of Sébastien Loeb Racing at the Rallye Antibes Cote D'Azur!
